Reflection Journal 9

The way this week starts off is the same way it starts off every week and thats with a briefing by Leon and Roger. Out of the whole briefing, the one point that caught my eye and my absolute attention was the part about defining a great song. The reason for this was because I never really looked at it from the perspective which they've opened our minds too nor has the thought ever crossed my mind. To sum up what was said, a monkey no matter how much you dress up or pamper, is still a monkey. This relates to music because a song no matter how many parts are added or what effects were used, is still a song. This too applies to the creation of a good song; A good song, even just with simple mixing or effects, or with heavy effects and mixing, will still be a good song, even without them. A good song could simply be played on just one acoustic guitar and it'd still be good. Then Leon proceeds to relate this to another realistic situation. He said that we should never use all these mixes or effects or some special whatever to make a song good because without all those in the first place, the song would just revert to what it was, which is a bad song. In short, mixes or effects or adding other instruments should make an already good song better, not to make a bad song good. These words in bold, I will surely remember and put to use in the future because it makes so much sense. Why does it make sense? Because I thought far back in the past to the era where studio mixing or any effects were not the norm. Back when the only showcase one could ever have where either through CD recordings which were recorded live or through live performances. Yet there were still musicians or bands who were able to emerge from that era and into the history of music. I literally left that room thinking "This makes so much sense" and just walked out stunned at the realisation of this.

When we went back to our groups to do the recordings because we were instructed to do another recording , with "producer" roles, the click and also alternate versions, I could tell the members were thinking the same thing I did. Was this song that we were doing truly what we thought is good enough? We thought for a while and eventually we thought, the song projected our emotions at the time so we believed so. We then proceeded to see what else we could do to make the song better.
