Reflection Journal 3
The way I interpreted the video was actually through the personification of the objects in it. I thought to myself at first " Why is the plastic bag just spinning round and round endlessly?". Then I was like , "Hey, this is pretty similar to some real life situations actually" and suddenly I thought of moments in my past where such situations could relate to the one in the video. Thats when I started to feel bad because in the video there doesn't seem to be any signs of stopping, its like the the plastic bag has no choice but to just go with the flow of the wind endlessly, like a restriction of freedom. And usually when I think of the word 'freedom', the common character that pops into my head are teenagers or maybe young children, and how there may be some adults or those of higher power/authority controlling their future without letting them have a say in their own. At this point, I let my personification run free and let my mind run; the plastic bag could represent these teenagers or children who start to become desperate; the violent wind could represent those controlling them;and the endless spinning could represent the endless tasks or commands given to the them by these 'controllers'. The feelings of desperation, the sensation of feeling strangled and limited all welled up inside me.
Anyway, our class decided to switch up the groups and I ended up working with new people. It was very interesting seeing the different styles we had come together to create a piece of music because we were trying to make every person in the group shine as best we could while at the same time creating a piece which all of us could agree on. Although it was different from the usual Rap + Vocals I was used to because of the past groups, the song we made in this group was unique in its own way and just like the last session, we focused on the lyrics and melody of the song rather than making it 'upbeat'. It was also amusing to see what inspiration each of us got from just a plastic bag floating around because everyone's ideas were different and each person interpreted it differently. Having this mission and working with new teammates are making me look forward to the next session because its such a valuable experience. Also, knowing I'll be working with new people using a different 'starting point' makes the process of creating music all the more interesting and something to be anticipated.
